What makes an excellent school?

It is important when looking at school improvement that you understand exactly what you are looking for and identifying what makes a school excellent in terms of both current performance and its prospects for improvement is key to this.

The Schools Performance Scrutiny Panel were therefore pleased to invite Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr Welsh Secondary School Headteacher and Chair of Governors for a question and answer session based on their Estyn Inspection and pupil outcomes. They have been judged as excellent in both the schools performance and their prospects for improvement.

The Panel were impressed with the ethos and the academic standards at the school and were especially pleased to see:

  1. A clear vision
  2. Positive ethos and a pupil centred approach
  3. Strong leadership from the management team at the school
  4. Committed and supportive governing body
  5. High expectations fromall pupils
  6. Good home school partnerships with parents
  7. Good working relationship with partner school Ysgol Gyfun Bryntawe
  8. Excellent academic results that are regularly among the highest nationally – resulting from high quality and regularly monitored teaching
  9. Appointment of a Learning Coach whose focus is pupils with FSM/deprivation factors including the lunchtime/after school sessions with Learning Coach

  10. Clear processes for self evaluation

They will also highlight three issues to the Cabinet member for Education that the school highlighted would help them (and other schools) in the future:

– Financial stability
– Effective planning in response to the growth in pupil numbers
– Support with national strategic developments such as literacy and numeracy
