Place Scrutiny Inquiry Panels agreed…

The Place Scrutiny Board agreed its first Inquiry Panels at a meeting on Monday (23 July).  After a process of prioritisation of potential topics at a recent work planning conference, two topics were proposed.  These being Tourism and Public Transport.

Tourism

Councillors agreed upon Tourism because it is one of our key economic sectors supporting over 5,398 jobs in the Swansea Bay area.  They agreed that the purpose of the Panel will be to investigate the following question ‘Are we making the most of Swansea’s potential as a destination for tourists including maximising the economic benefits to Swansea?’  It is anticipated that the inquiry will take approximately six months to complete and will culminate in conclusions and recommendations being put forward to the Council’s Cabinet for decision.  The first meeting will take place next week where Councillors will put together their scope and project plan for the review.

This issue was identified by the public as a significant issue of concern.  It has also been identifed that the Welsh Government is to reduce transport subsidies to bus companies and Councils.  Councillors felt it was particularly important because access to public transport is key in helping to combat inequality and social deprevation.  The first meeting will take place in a couple of weeks where Councillors will put together their scope and project plan for the review.  It is anticipated that the inquiry will take approximately six months to complete and will culminate in conclusions and recommendations being put forward to the Council’s Cabinet for decision.
